Roland F. Jones, 92, of Jefferson, passed away at the VA Medical Center Togus on Feb. 19. He was born on Aug. 30, 1922 to Wilder and Grace Jones in Jefferson.
Roland attended local schools and went on to working at a young age. He then joined the Army in 1942. He was very dedicated and proud of his service for our country and freedom.
On Jan. 25, 1947 he married Geraldine Jones. Together they had nine children.
Roland worked many years in forestry and excavation. You could always find him outside working. He was very devoted to providing for his wife and children. Roland enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes and bowling. He was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW and dedicated to (DAV) Disabled American Veterans.
He was in the Red Ball Express Convoy during WWII. His tour included Northern France, the Rhineland, and central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Euro-African East Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and the Motor Vehicle Drivers Award.
Roland is predeceased by daughter, Diana; son, Steven; grandson, Joshua; brothers, Tom, Cliff, Linwood, and Raymond Jones; and sisters, Doris Boynton, and Dorothy Hodgkins.
He is survived by wife Geraldine (Achorn) Jones; sons, Ronald and wife Carol of Jefferson, Wayne and wife Carol of Jefferson, and Dana and wife Paula of Nobleboro; daughters, Donna and husband David Burns of Whiting, Sandra and husband Carl Mathieu of Vassalboro, Brenda Jones and husband David Page of Damariscotta, and Cathy and husband Rob Leavitt of Damariscotta; grandchildren, Brett Jones, Bethany Perry, Angela Sprague, Rebecca Burns Hanscom, Robert Burns, Greg Burns, Mary Gurney, Eric Burns, Ashley Mathieu, Michelle Mathieu, Jessica Sullivan, Caleb Jones, Jacob Jones, Jamie Barstow, Christopher Barstow, Kyle Jones, Ryan Jones, Tyler Leavitt, Dylan Leavitt, Ryley Leavitt, Evan Jones, and Emma Jones; great-grandchildren, Conor Jones, Hallee Jones, Paige Perry, Olivia Perry, Emily Sprague, Logan Hanscom, Lucas Hanscom, Olivia Hanscom, Jordan Burns, Brendon Burns, Griffin Burns, Ellie Burns, Steven Burns, Johanna Sullivan, Jason Jones, and Ashlyn Jones; and great-great-grandchild, Remington Hanscom.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Shuman Cemetery in Waldoboro. Service information will be announced in the spring.
