Roland W. Chaples, 83, of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport on Dec. 13. He was born on March 29, 1929 in Rockland, the son of the late Wendall and Phyllis Dyer Chaples.
After school he joined the U.S. Navy where he served until he was honorably discharged. After serving his country he began his fishing career in New Bedford, Mass. He was the captain of various scallop boats throughout his career until he retired at the age of 60. Throughout the fishing community he was known as a true gentleman.
In 1973 he and his wife Lorraine moved to Maine. They enjoyed spending their summers camping and would go to as many different campgrounds as they could, spending each and every summer camping around the state. Eventually they found a spot on Eagle Lake where they would set up their fifth wheel camper for the season, something they enjoyed doing for almost 25 years. When they were not camping, the two could be found near any body of water that had fish as the two loved to cast lines together. He was also an avid deer hunter, spending his falls in the woods. When he wasn’t outdoors, you could probably find him watching sports on television especially if there was a hockey game on.
He loved his family and his friends and would try to spend as much time as he could with them. He adored his wife Lorraine, she was his world.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Lorraine Chaples; and brother, Richard Chaples.
Survivors include daughters, Rolanda Garcia of Newport, R.I., Beverly Francis and husband Ronnie of Fairhaven, Mass., and Florence Skinner and husband Paul of Fairhaven, Mass.; sons, Donald Lizotte and wife Susan of North Carolina, Charles Chaples and companion Faith Levitt of Marion, Mass., and Earl Chaples of New Bedford, Mass.; brothers, Charles Chaples of Mattapoisett, Mass., and Robert Chaples of Stoughton, Mass.; sisters, Lois Barton of Fairhaven, Mass., and Jeanette Harris of Florida; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Ernie Lizotte and wife Mary of Fairhaven, Mass.
