Ruth Williams, 85, of Boothbay and the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village, passed away with her family at her side Aug. 12 after a long and courageously fought battle with Alzheimer’s.
Ruth was born in Suffern, N.Y. on Sept. 18, 1924 to Helen and Daniel Courtney.
She attended schools in Mahwah and Ramsey, N.J. and went on to graduate from the Jersey City State Teachers College with a Bachelors of Arts degree. From there she attended the Jersey City Medical Center and received her Registered Nursing Degree.
Shortly after graduating she met Stanley Williams and after several years of courtship, interrupted by the war, they married in 1946. On June 30 they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
Ruth worked for the Mahwah public school system as school nurse for 15 years. Ruth and Stan lived in Mahwah, N.J. and raised their three children before moving to Ocean Point, East Boothbay in 1981.
Ruth went back to nursing as the office nurse for Dr. Douglas Long and continued in that position for 10 years. She and Stan loved traveling all over Maine and Eastern Canada as well as her favorite destination, Ireland where her family was from and where she still had distant relatives.
She is survived by husband Stanley Williams of Boothbay; brother, George Courtney of Coco, Fla.; children, Kathleen Herrington and husband Gary of St. Petersburg, Fla., Peter Williams and wife Mary of East Boothbay, Llewellyn Williams and wife Lori of Harriman, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Christopher Williams, Brian Williams and wife Julie, Patrick Herrington and wife Melissa, and Daniel Herrington and wife Jessica, and Melissa and Michael Williams.
