Samuel Wayne Plummer, 86, died Oct. 16 at Cove’s Edge after a long illness.
He was born July 6th, 1920, in Nobleboro, to Clyde and Mary (Tomlinson) Plummer.
He grew up in Damariscotta Mills with his sisters, Francis, Dorothy and Florence. Sam graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1937 and was employed by H.G. Marr Shipyards in Damariscotta.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, serving honorably in WWII. Sgt. Plummer was a mechanic for B-29 Bombers and received a commendation from Brigadier General H.S. Hansell, Commanding General for XXI Bomber Command in Guam.
Later, Sam became a stonemason by trade and for many years worked with Ralph Burnham.
As a child, Sam was stricken with polio and spent time in an iron lung, but never let that stand in the way of living life to the fullest. He was an avid hunter and fisherman for many years. His family has many fond memories from fishing to boating to picnics as well as ice fishing in subzero temperatures.
Sam married Marcia Hawthorne Lantz, who passed away in June of 1998.
He was a wonderful father to David, John, Kaye and Sarah; a loving “Papaw” to Marcie and Michael, Matthew, Katie, Stephanie and Jody; a very much-loved uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Florence Waltz and husband Carroll.
A gentle man with a kind and generous heart, for years Sam remembered every birthday and would send cards without fail to all of the family. He was also very much loved by his Cove’s Edge family, always a smile for everyone.
Service to honor Sam 11 a.m., Fri., Oct. 27 at the Chapel of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, with Pastor Scott Townsend officiating.
He will be laid to rest with his wife at the Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro.
