Thomas J. Bacon, 88, of North Haven, Conn., passed away on July 7 after a brief stay at Connecticut Hospice. He was born in Hampton, Va. on March 4, 1923 to the late David L. and Maria Hart Bacon. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a survivor of the Malmedy Massacre of December 1944 where he was taken prisoner by the Reich.
Tom was introduced to Deer Isle in 1939 by his wife, the former Ann (Andy) Winn whose family owned the former tea house known as The Larches. After returning from the war, Andy and Tom were married and he continued his education at Cornell University. He went to work for the State of Connecticut in Highway Acquisitions, returning to The Larches for a portion of every summer. He enjoyed sailing and was a long-time member of the Deer Isle Yacht Club.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, David Bacon.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years; sons, John and wife Carol (Aigner) Bacon of Waldoboro and Deer Isle, and Wilson and wife Leslie (Wallace) Bacon of New Haven, Conn.; grandchildren, Julie, Neil and Scott Bacon; and siblings, Hugh Bacon of Oregon, Walter Bacon of North Branford, Conn., Elizabeth Oberg of Old Lyme, Conn. and Benjamin Bacon of Toronto, Canada.
Services were private.
