Virginia “Jean” Tarr, 91, of New Harbor, passed away at Cove’s Edge Nursing Facility on the morning of Nov. 2 with her family by her side, after a period of declining health. Born on June 7, 1923 in Amesbury, Mass., she was the daughter of Russell E. and Goldie V. (Lewis) Blaisdell.
While young, she moved with her family to Pemaquid Beach, where she grew up and graduated from Bristol High School in 1940. She furthered her education at Bliss Business School in Lewiston, and later graduated from the University of Maine with her degree in education.
She became a teacher and taught at schools in Belgrade, Castine, Wiscasset, and Dresden. On Sept. 9, 1945, she married Frank S. Tarr, and the couple moved to New Harbor.
Jean enjoyed travelling, playing bridge, games of chance, and watching both NASCAR and the Boston Red Sox. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Pemaquid Beach Community Club. She loved spending time with people, and her house was always open for family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank S. Tarr; niece, Sally Field; and son-in-law, Jerry Rice.
She is survived by daughter, Pam Rice of New Harbor; sisters, Charlene Stimpson of Tenants Harbor, and Evelyn Radivonyk of Damariscotta; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
A time of visitation will be held 5-6 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 6 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home in Damariscotta. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Fri., Nov. 7 at the New Harbor United Methodist Church. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the New Harbor Cemetery following the service.
