Wallace “Jr.” Barter Jr., 86, passed away Jan. 9 at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick. He was born on July 30, 1927 in Boothbay Harbor where he lived most of his life. Wallace attended Boothbay schools, and worked in the local shipyards. He worked at Mass hospitals for five years and at Bath Memorial Hospital for 23 years, also part-time for the Public Health Department.
Wallace served as a corporal for the U.S. Army in Germany and France with the 109th Combat Engineering Battalion Organization. He was a member of The American Legion, Bradford Sortwell Wright Post #54 Wiscasset, and The Arambec Lodge #71 IOOF Oddfellows Wiscasset. Other posts include Post #26, Post #34, and Post #176.
Wally loved Boothbay Harbor and most days you could find him on the library lawn as he sat and watched the goings on. After moving to Bath, he could be seen him walking to Bracketts to get his morning papers, coffee, and breakfast sandwich with his friend Mark. He loved to walk around town, and enjoyed the waterfront watching the boats.
He leaves behind his son, Kenneth Barter of Boothbay Harbor; daughters, Diane Wright and husband David of Bath, Joyce Ashton of Boothbay Harbor, and Lori Ponziani and husband Michael of Woolwich; brother, William Barter of California; and close nieces and nephews, especially Terry and Timmy.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sat., Jan. 18 with a celebration of his life immediately following service at the Boothbay Baptist Church with Pastor Steven Nash reciting.
