Warner A. Howard, 85, of Jefferson, passed away June 29 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta.
Warner was born on Nov. 2, 1922 in Union, the son of the late John L. and Addie M. Kennedy Howard.
He attended local schools and was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1941. He worked at Thurston Brother’s Casket Company in Union, at J.C. Creighton Grocery Store in Union and on Nov. 12, 1942 he joined the U.S. Army-Airforce and served in Northern France. He received the Rhineland Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Service Medal. In 1945 he was honorably discharged from the service as a Staff Sgt.
He met Virginia Glidden and they were married on Dec. 24, 1945 in the UMC in Union. They made their home in Jefferson where they raised their two children.
Warner worked in the Coopers Mills Post Office from 1947 thru June 15, 1979. He also was the Pastor of the North Nobleboro Baptist Church from Dec. 6, 1957, retiring from there on Jan. 2, 1997.
He loved woodworking and making furniture and in the recent years made treasure chests. He was a Deacon of the Coopers Mills Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and his favorite flowers were gladiolas and roses.
He will be remembered as a “Jack of All Trades”, and could often be found repairing anything needing repair in the church. Anyone who had something broken and needed it fixed could count on Warner to fix it. He had a dry sense of humor, often telling very funny “clean” jokes.
