Wendell A. Reed, 80, of Friendship, left this life Oct. 15 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Wendell was born Aug. 22, 1930 in Friendship, the son of Phillip (Sr.) and Mildred Simmons Reed, and attended Friendship schools.
A veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal.
A hard worker all his life, he founded and operated W. A. Reed and sons at Hatchet Cove, Friendship, which he operated for many years, and also spent many years on the water as a lobster fisherman.
He was an avid Red Sox fan, and loved to operate his tractor around the home, especially bush hogging the fields.
Wendell is predeceased by his parents; two sons, Craig in 1987 and Barry in 1999; and his brother Wilbur in 1982.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Clara Peterson Reed of Friendship; sons, Neal Reed and wife Linda of Friendship, Kerry Reed and wife Nina of Warren, and Brian Reed and wife Robin of Friendship; grandchildren, Andrew and Megan Reed of Friendship, Daphanie Blackler and companion Mark Elwell of Warren, Carrie Emerson, and Barry Reed, both of Friendship, Aaron Reed of New York, Hillary Ghani and husband Irfan of Florida, Taylor Reed and companion Madonna of Rockland, Olivia Reed of Warren, Audrey Hannah and husband Mike of Friendship, and Dillon Reed of Friendship; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Phillip Reed and wife Evelyn of Friendship, Robert Reed and wife Louise of Friendship; aunt, Glenice Harrington of Cushing; and uncle, Melvin Simmons and wife Murtel of Cushing.
Graveside service with military honors 11 a.m., Wed., Oct. 20 at the Brookside Cemetery, Colonel Stairs Rd., Friendship, with Rev. Henderson officiating.
