William “Billy” Burton Latter, 79, passed away peacefully at his home on July 12. Billy was born on Aug. 16, 1936 to Richard Mitchell Latter Sr. and Mary Dickerson Latter in Boothbay Harbor. Billy grew up in the Boothbay region, graduating from the Boothbay Harbor High School, Class of 1954.
Billy worked as a painter for Paul Abbott. He also worked at the Paul E. Luke Boatyard for 26 years, Fuller Shipyard and finally working at Hodgdon Yachts until his retirement. Billy was a member of the Hot Rod Association. He enjoyed racing in Sanford, Norridgewock, Oxford, Winterport, and the New England Drag Way in Epping, N.H.
Billy is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Richard Latter Jr. and Francis “Fanny” Latter.
He is survived by brother, Robert Latter and wife Jean of Boothbay; sister-in-law, Judith Latter of Wiscasset; nieces, Sue Foye of Wiscasset, Richelle Pontau of Wiscasset, and Cathy Latter of Boothbay Harbor; and nephews, Richard Latter III of Wiscasset, Rob Latter of Boothbay Harbor, Mickey Latter of Boothbay, and Tracey Latter of Boothbay.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Thurs., July 14 at Hall’s of Boothbay, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. A celebration of Billy’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Fri., July 15 at Hall’s of Boothbay, with a graveside committal to follow at Ocean View Cemetery, Boothbay. Al Roberts will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Billy’s name to either the Meals on Wheels Program, c/o Patricia Wheeler, 17 West St., Boothbay Harbor, or The Boothbay Food Pantry, P.O. Box 63, East Boothbay.
