William Bradley Esancy, 84, of Jefferson, died peacefully at his home on the morning of Feb. 20.
He was born Jan. 12, 1931 in Augusta, a son of the late Walter and Verna (Troop) Esancy. He was a graduate of Cony High School, a member of the class of 1949, and a graduate of Springfield College, a member of the class of 1955.
On July 28, 1951, he married Joanne Chaples in Bangor and together they made their home in New Bedford, Mass., moved to Mattapoiset, Mass., before returning to Maine in 1999.
Mr. Esancy taught physical education for many years at the New Bedford High School, where he served as the school’s athletic trainer and coach of the girls tennis team. He was the recipient of the Boston Globe Coach of the Year Award for Girls Tennis.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sons, Christopher William, Brent Walter, and Andrew David.
Mr. Esancy is survived by his loving wife of more than sixty-three years of Jefferson; son, Dr. James Frank Esancy and wife Dr. Michelle Esancy of Huntersville, N.C.; daughters-in-law, Laurie, Shelly, and Jane; grandchildren, Andrew, Charlotte, Benjamin, Rachel, Samuel, Sheena, Caitlyn, Jackie, Robert, Amanda, Dominic, Kara, Kerrie, Joshua, Cheryl, Kylie, Kali, and Camdon; and great-grandchildren, Emily, William, Halle, Daxton, Lincoln, and Levi.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation 4-6 p.m., Mon., Feb. 23 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral will be conducted to celebrate his life at 2 p.m., Tues., Feb. 24 at the Second Congregational Church, 51 Main St., Newcastle.
