Zana Marian Kerber, 91, of Newcastle, passed away May 3.
Zana was born in Cadiz, Ohio on Oct. 18, 1923. Her parents were Lillian Kennedy Pannill and William Camp Pannill Jr. Zana grew up in Kingsville, Md.
She graduated from Union Memorial Nursing School in Baltimore in 1944 and worked as a Registered Nurse during WWII at the government military hospital, Marine Hospital, in Baltimore.
Zana married Charles F. Kerber in May 1948. They lived in Towson, Md. and raised their family in the Baltimore area and later in the Annapolis, Md. area.
Zana and Charles retired to Berkeley Springs, W.Va. in 1980. During the years following, Zana was an avid gardener, especially flowers. She joined the West Virginia Extension Homemakers and began expressing her artistic talents through quilting. In 1987 Charles and Zana moved to Bristol and Zana continued doing quilted wall-hangings, most notably, a section of the Damariscotta River quilt. Zana was a member of the Clamshell Quilters group. Zana and Charles belonged to Water of Life Lutheran Church in Newcastle. She created many quilted wall-hangings to be displayed during Pentecost, Lent, Easter, Advent, Epiphany, and Reformation.
Zana was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 2001.
Survivors include daughter, Nancy Jo Parker and husband Cliff of Newcastle; son, Philip Charles Kerber and wife Carla Ann of Freeport; and grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Alice, and Robin.
A memorial service will be held at Water of Life Lutheran Church at 11 a.m., Sat., May 30.
