Our infallible statistician, Joe McDermott, reported five teams tied for first place: Bob Piper and Dan Mocarski, Joe McDermott and Tony Papa, Marty Olsen and Bob Laird, Jim Spinney and John Hanna and John Ineson and Ian Drewette. (Ian was subbing for Derek Deeger.) All five teams were awarded one point.
The team with the lowest point total at the end of the season wins. Gary Stadtlander and Clyde Madan were second and received two points. John Ineson and Ian Drewette had the fewest number of putts with 13. Clyde Madan, Marty Olsen and Bob Laird were witnesses to an unusual shot sequence by Gary Stadtlander.
Gary’s ball was resting next to the creek on the sixth hole. His shot from that location caromed off the maple tree and landed under the bridge. His next shot, after taking a penalty drop, ricocheted off the bridge landing just beyond the maple tree.
Despite the adversity Gary remained calm and maintained his composure. I learned later that he is known as Tree Trunk Stadtlander. John Hanna, who scored an ace last year in the Lions-Rotary Golf Tournament, reports that he had two more holes-in-one in Florida this past winter. We must find out John’s secret!
(Thanks to Trudi Snediker for the report.)
A quick tip or drill to help resolve this problem with the driver or with any club in your bag is bending more at the waist on your right side (the left side if left-handed) as the club meets the ball. This will help you keep your weight behind or with the ball during impact, which will give you more distance and straightness. (Thanks to teaching pro, Johnny Johnston, for this tip.)
