Lincoln Academy boys’ soccer team defeated Leavitt 1-0 Saturday night in preliminary action to advance to the West Class B quarterfinals against Falmouth. The Eagles met up with Leavitt early on in their KVAC season and won overwhelmingly by 4-0 decision. Lincoln met a much different team Saturday under the lights in Newcastle.
The Eagles out shot Leavitt 31-7. Korey Mulherin was the neutralizing factor for the Hornets, rejecting 23 Eagle shots.
In 1st half action, Mulherin stopped multiple shots from Brandon Bonney, Ben Stone, Nic Phinney, Tom Masters, Bo McLain, Kaleab Buckwalder and Sawyer Pinkham.
All season, Lincoln Academy has struggled to get shots off, severely limiting their scoring opportunities. On Saturday, the Eagles passed and shot fluidly, and their efforts paid off in the 2nd half.
After 67 scoreless minutes, the Eagles got a shot past Mulherin. Bo McLain set up the goal with a little pass to Brandon Bonney on the right side of the penalty box. Bonney one timed a shot to the corner for the game winner.
Merritt Wotton made six saves for Lincoln to earn the shutout. Defenders Ryan Peters, Nic Phinney, Kyle O’Brien, Ben Stone and Michael McCormick kept the Hornets out of the Eagles’ nest, and out of Wotton’s hair for most of the game.
Lincoln travels to Falmouth Wed., Oct. 26 for a 6 p.m. game under the lights.
