Lincoln Academy baseball defeated Wells 3-1 in the Western Maine Class B quarterfinals June 8 in Bath, to advance to the semi-final round. The Eagles played their home game in Bath, because LA’s field was set up for graduation.
Brandon Reilly went the distance in the win, striking out 13 (5H, 2B). Brandon Pridham took the loss (6I, 2K, H, 3B) in the pitchers’ duel.
Lincoln took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a Jeff Lamb sacrifice ground out that scored Kyle Scherer.
Wells tied the score in the top of the 3rd, when Joe Spinelli singled, stole second, and scored on the wild throw down to second that went to the centerfield fence.
Lincoln got the run back in the home half of the 3rd. Dalton Leeman singled, moved over on an Alex Cosgrove fielder’s choice and scored on a Reilly single.
Merritt Wotton hit a lead off double in the 6th, went to third on an error and scored on a Lamb single to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Hitting for Lincoln were Mardy Alden with 2 singles, Wotton a double and Lamb and Reilly a single each. Hitting for Wells were Paul McDounough with two, and Spinelli, Pridham and Josh Ingalls one each.
Defensively, Scherer had a nice “spot tag on a wild throw” to first base; and in “the 6th, Reilly picked off McDonough at first” after he reached on a single, coach Greg Rice said.
