Lincoln Academy girls’ swim team’s “Fab Four” placed seventh at the State Class B swimming championships, held Feb. 19 at the University of Maine Orono. After the morning preliminaries, four Lady Eagles: Heidi Ziegra, Kara Mullin, Valeska Vaughn and Gretchen Konitzky advanced to the finals.
“For four girls to come in seventh is just fantastic. I’m very, very proud of them,” coach Don Strout said.
The top three spots in each race receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Fourth through eighth place receive medals, and ninth through 16th place ribbons.
Lincoln girls collected the Bronze medal in the 200 free relay in 1:49.28 with Ziegra, Mullin, Vaughn and Konitzky swimming a leg. They placed 5th in the 500 free relay in 4:07.05 with the same four girls.
Kara Mullin medalled in two events, taking fourth in the 200 IM in 2:23.86 and fourth the 500 free in 5:42.78. Both times set new Lincoln Academy school records.
Heidi Ziegra medalled in two events, placing sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:08 and 8th in the 200 free in 2:13.
Valeska Vaughn medalled in the 50 free in 27.01 and collected a ribbon in the 100 free with a 16th place finish in 1:03.
Freshman Gretchen Konitzky collected ribbons in two events, placing 15th in the 100 free in 1:02 and 16th in the 100 back in 1:13.
There were 24 teams competing in the State championship meet. MDI won with 375 points, followed by Greely 328.5, Waynflete 232, McAuley 166, Foxcroft 160.5, Yarmouth 141 and Lincoln Academy 131.
