Medomak Valley girls’ cross country team qualified for the State Class B championships for the fourth straight year. The States will be held at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast on Sat., Oct. 30 at 11:45 a.m.
Gwen Moiles placed eighth at the East B Regionals in Belfast in a time of 20:23 to lead the Lady Panthers. Moiles and Megan Wyllie (19th) both qualified individually for the State meet.
Wyllie placed 19th in 21:06, Jocelyn Thames 41st in 22:28, Alyssa Griggs 48th in 22:42, and Heidi Harris 54th in 23:00 to complete Medomak’s scoring five. Jordan Hopkins placed 69th in 23:53, and Shannon Staples 72nd in 23:58.
Dacie Manion won the East B race in 19:03. The top 50 percent of schools (seven) qualified for the State meet. Medomak girls placed sixth with 166 points. John Bapst won the girls’ East B title with 72 points, followed by MDI 80, Caribou 117, Hampden 129, Winslow 161, Medomak 166, Presque Isle 188, Ellsworth 192, Camden 227, Belfast 253, Waterville 282, Erskine 293, Old Town 306, and Hermon 366.
Medomak sophomore Nick Anderson missed qualifying for the Class B Boys’ State championship meet by a couple of seconds. Anderson finished in 22nd place in a time of 18:14.
Medomak boys’ team finished 10th. Dan Curts of Ellsworth won the Regional title in 16:26. Caribou won the East B title with 52 points, followed by Hampden 63, Ellsworth 84, Winslow 103, Erskine 138, John Bapst 192, Presque Isle 207, MDI 235, Camden 266, Medomak 274, Belfast 291, Waterville 293, Hermon 323, Old Town 352, and MCI 437.
Panther Joe Murphy placed 45th in 18:57, Brendon O’Donnell 59th in 19:34; Quinton Vannah 71st in 20:06; Ivan Johnson 77th in 20:17; Ian Rixon 83rd in 20:21; and Alexander Casas 87th in 20:58.
Anderson “had a good run. He is progressing well. We looked at the numbers, and he is right there with Alex (Goldrup) and Matt (Poulin). We’re hoping for good things from him in the future,” coach George Gould said.
“I’m happy with how everyone ran. The competition is so tough. I agree with the move from two-thirds to one-half,” for qualification for the State meet. “The half that make it deserve it,” Gould said.
