Midcoast South 13 Babe Ruth All-stars won one game and lost two in the District 2 tournament, held at Mt. Ararat Jr. High in Topsham last weekend. It was a frustrating tournament for coaches, parents, and players alike. Wednesday before the game, coaches were told at a Midcoast Babe Ruth meeting, that they did not need players’ birth certificates. When Midcoast North and Midcoast South showed up to play early Friday afternoon, the two teams were not allowed to play because neither team had the proper paperwork. The two teams were allowed to make-up the game Saturday morning.
The two teams were tied 2-2 after two innings, before North took advantage of South’s mistakes in the 3rd to score five runs. South pulled within two in the top of the 6th, but was unable to complete the rally.
Hitting for South were McMahan with a double and single, Greg Anderson two singles, and Micah Williamson, Brett Cowan, Travis Padilla and Walker Ranney a single each. Hitting for North was Benner with four singles and Roman, Hall, Pierce, and Graffam a single each.
South fell behind 6-1, before rallying to take the lead in the top of the 7th. Ararat tied the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the 7th to force an extra inning. The game was called for darkness, and both teams traveled back to Topsham on Sunday morning to finish up.
Ararat jumped out to a 4-0 1st inning lead on two walks, an error, RBI single to Kevin Coner and RBI double to Dakota D’Ono.
South got one run back in the 2nd when Calvin Robbins singled and scored when Walker Ranney reached on an error. Ararat scored two in the bottom of the inning on four walks.
South scored two runs in the 4th on singles to Travis Padilla, Robbins (RBI) and Ranney, and an RBI ground out to Jimmy Strong. They added a run in the 6th when Padilla walked and scored on a Robbins ground out. South took a 7-6 lead with a three run 7th inning. Williamson hit a lead off single, Scott Strong singled, Jamie Temple hit an RBI single, Cowan reached on a fielder’s choice, and McMahan hit an RBI single. Cowan scored on a passed ball to give South their first lead of the game.
Ararat plated a run in the bottom of the 7th to force an extra inning. Ryan Freeman walked and scored on a passed ball.
South rallied for four runs to take an 11-7 lead. Micah Williamson singled and scored on a Jamie Temple single. Dillon McMann drove home Temple on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Travis Padilla fielder’s choice. Brett Cowan walked and scored on a passed ball.
Hitting for South were Temple with three singles, McMahan a double and single, Robbins two singles, Ranney and Williamson, Cowan, Padilla and S. Strong a single each. Hitting for Ararat were D’Ona a double, and Lian Brannigan, Chris Billings, John Pierce, John Raux, and Coner a single each.
Hitting for South were Williamson, McMahan and S. Strong. Hitting for Brunswick were Myles Silverman and Pearson Cost with 3 singles each, and Parker Wild, Adam Casey, Charlie Lowell and Fynn Artur with one each.
