Christian Moon, 6, of Jefferson, won second place in fighting and third place in Chanbara in Huard’s 31st Annual Martial Arts Championships, held Sat. March 26 at Sukee Arena & Events Center in Winslow. Moon competed in three events in the charity championship, which raises money for Maine’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
He competed in Forms, Chanbara and Fighting in the Novice level which is made up of 6-7-year-olds.
“Although he didn’t place in the forms competition we are all very impressed at him for trying this,” his mother Cheryl Moon said. “He was not sure he really wanted to attempt forms but he was the first child who was called from his group and he tried his best at something he wasn’t completely comfortable with in front of many spectators.”
Moon brought home a first place trophy in his first competition in 2010.
Christian attends Karate once a week in Winslow at Huard’s Ju-Jitsu & Karate and is being taught by Sensei Mark Huard.
“Although we live in Jefferson, the trip to Winslow for karate has been worth more than words can say,” Cheryl Moon said. “Huard’s was suggested to me nearly two years ago during a conversation about the struggles I was having with Christian’s behavior. I was told that Huard’s was a great place for kids and that their reputation for working with children was excellent. It has more than paid off for Christian. He has made great improvements in his self esteem, his behavior, and his willingness to help others, among other things.”
Christian earned his yellow apprentice belt on Dec. 17 and earned his full yellow belt Feb. 18. He is the son of Cheryl Moon of Jefferson and Deven Moon of Winslow.
