Professional wrestling fans were treated to a classic at Medomak Valley High School Friday night as a card of NWA on Fire wrestlers was taped for a broadcast that will air on Channel 3 on Time Warner in six to eight weeks.
NWA on Fire airs at 10 p.m. on Friday nights. To check out the status of the Waldoboro show’s upcoming television airing go to their website at www.nwaonfire.com.
The show opened with a 14 man over the top Battle Royal. The everyman for himself free for all was a battle for the opportunity to challenge Golden Boy Bobby Robinson for the NWA on Fire heavyweight championship belt later in the evening.
Big stars at the event included the Golden Boy and Apollo El Leone (Spanish Lion). The Golden Boy had very few fans at the event, and was booed and harassed with the nickname the golden girl.
The Zumba dancing Chico was a crowd favorite. When the villainous Maliki cheated to beat the happy go lucky dancing Chico, the crowd went wild, forcing the official to change his call and award the victory to Chico. Phillip Rogers, of Union, was the leader of the crowd protest, and helped Chico celebrate his victory with a little Zumba inside the ring.
Although over the top, the athletic ability of the performers was outstanding, from full gainers off the top ropes onto moving competitors; double clotheslines with a loud double landing on the mat; coordinated throws; to exhilarating tosses out of the ring onto the hardwood floor below, professional wrestling fans loved it all.
The well rehearsed and orchestrated event drew the crowd into the drama with the film camera’s rolling to capture the action to be replayed later on national TV.
The highlight of the event was the NWA on Fire Heavyweight championship belt challenge. The Golden Boy Bobby Robinson successfully held off challenger Cameron Mathews. Mathews had the Golden Boy’s back on the mat on several occasions, but Robinson pushed him off a millisecond before the official called three. The fans got into the spirit of the moment, yelling at the official and making hand movements indicating one-two-three, and yelling he was pinned, he was pinned. In the end the Golden Boy won out, to the chastisement of the fans.
The event was a fundraiser for MVHS’s senior class.
