Wiscasset boys’ soccer team are cleaning house in the Mt. Valley Conference, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Mustangs of Monmouth were the latest victims falling 4-0 in Monmouth on Sept. 16.
The Redskins dominated play, with keeper Matt Brewer collecting just two saves. Robby Neal made 15 stops in net for Monmouth.
Brian Campbell found net on an Ashton Benn feed to put Wiscasset up 1-0. Tyler Sonia made it 2-0 at the half on a “nice shot from 18 yards out,” coach Wayne Benn said.
John McLeod converted a pass from Campbell. Benn picked up his second assist of the game when he fed Corey Hodgdon for his first goal of the season.
The Redskins opened scoring three and a half minutes into the contest when John McLeod stole the ball and went one on one with Rambler keeper Cameron McMillon, beating him to the lower right corner.
Six minutes later, McLeod scored again on a breakaway cross from Tyler Sonia. Sonia could have taken a shot on the play, but looked to his left and saw McLeod wide open, so dished a soft pass over to him for a walk-in goal.
McLeod scored his third of four goals with 18 minutes to go in the half when he beat a double team at the defensive 18. James Andretta put Wiscasset up 4-0 at the half when he converted a Caleb Bryant feed with 11 minutes to play.
Casey Hodgdon set up the fifth goal of the night with a nice cross from the right wing to Ashton Benn in the middle 11 minutes into the half. Three minutes later McLeod fired in his fourth goal on a cross from Ross Hanley on the left wing.
Tyler Sonia scored the final two goals for the Redskins, the first on a feed from Eddie Stewart. Sonia stole the ball from Winthrop defenders, sprinted 45 yards for an uncontested breakaway goal.
Wiscasset held a 35-5 edge in shots. Mason Brewer made five saves in net for Wiscasset, and Cameron McMillon six, and Josh LaPointe 13 for Winthrop.
