Wiscasset boys’ basketball team defeated St. Dom’s 42-38 Monday night to improve their record to 9-6. The huge win boosted them to eighth place in the West Class B heal point standings. After a slow start to their season, the Wolverines have won seven out of their last eight ball games.
The Saints jumped on Wiscasset early Monday night, taking an 11-6 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Wiscasset turned the ball over on their first five possessions, before settling down and finding their groove.
Caleb Bryant cut the lead to three at the start of the 2nd period on a pass from Austin Haskell. St. Dom’s scored six straight to boost their lead to nine. Bryant scored one at the foul line and two off the offensive glass, and Austin scored on a Jordan Jones pass to cut the lead to four, 17-13 at the half.
The Saints went up by seven in the 3rd. Haskell found Travis Padilla open twice underneath for back-to-back hoops to cut the lead to three. Ian McCracken and Jason Weatherbee traded hoops, before Saint Joe Bryant scored and Tom Applegate settled a shot at the foul line to boost the lead to six.
Wiscasset had the last say of the period, scoring the final seven points to take their first lead of the ball game 28-27 at the end of three. Ben Sutter, Weatherbee and Padilla scored in the rally.
The Saints tied the game briefly in the 4th quarter. Wiscasset responded with seven straight points, on a hoop from Jones, a three-pointer from Haskell and basket from Bryant.
Andrew Gosselin scored a three and Applegate crashed the glass for two to cut the lead to two with 2:35 to play. Haskell settled two at the charity stripe with 14 seconds to play to put Wiscasset up by four. Bryant sank a pair at the line for St. Dom’s with eight seconds left, and the Saints fouled Wiscasset quickly on the inbound ball. Devin Grover sealed the win for the Wolverines with two foul shots with eight seconds left.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Weatherbee 10 (9R), Haskell 9 (4R,6A), Bryant 7 (7R,5S), Jones 6 (3S,5A), Padilla 6 (3R), Sutter 2, and Grover 2. Scoring for St. Dom’s were Applegate 13 (17R), Bryant 12 (4S), Gosselin 7 (8R), Zak Johnson 4, and McCracken 2.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Cory Hodgdon 10 (3S), Travis Padilla 9 (12R,3S), Jason Weatherbee 8 (7R), Jordan Jones 7 (7A,4S), James Andretta 6, Caleb Bryant 6 (7R), Austin Haskell 5 (5A), and Ben Sutter 2. Scoring for Monmouth were Goff 8, Cummings 5, Copeland 4, and Gallagher, McCue and McFarin 2 each.
