Wiscasset girls’ basketball team have struggled all year to play well for four straight quarters, until Jan. 20, when their game finally clicked into place in front of their home town fans.
They were rewarded for their superb effort with a 53-51 win over Madison, their first win of the season. “It was a really tight game. I don’t think either team led by more than five points,” coach Patrick Quinn said.
“They played some good ball, good team ball. They scrapped the entire game. We pressed and made some easy baskets off our pressure,” Quinn said.
Wiscasset led 12-8 at the quarter, trailed 22-25 at the half and led 42-38 at the end of three. “We got up and had to hold them off with the foul shot game,” Quinn said.
Although Wiscasset did not shoot particularly well at the charity stripe (15 for 33), they made five crucial shots out of 13 attempts in the fourth quarter to pull out their first win of the season.
Three Wiscasset players scored in double figures in the win. Alli Johnson scored a season high 20 points, Kayla Connors 17 (10R), Brianna Goud 11 and Maryellen True 5. Scoring for Madison were Samantha Bruce 17, Kirsten Wood 8, Lindsay Weese 8, Alex Jarvais 6, Emily McKenney 3,Kelly Costa 2.
