Over 100 kids, humans, and zombies participated in the third annual Central Lincoln County YMCA Zombie Run Saturday morning. The benefit run raised $2,400 for youth scholarships at the Y.
There were 80 participants in the 5K run, and 30 kids in the fun run. The event, featuring elaborately decorated zombies, was not clocked. Cool, crisp autumn air was perfect for the running of the ghoulish event that saw the humans running for their lives.
“Jumpers” lurked in the woods and leapt onto the course to surprise humans and rip off one or all three of their flags.
The top human in the race was J.C. Bartolome, who beat out second-place finisher Nolan Anderson by a few seconds.
Mathew Young was the first zombie to cross the finish line.
Best costume awards in the kids fun run went to Aidan Jacobs, Emmaline Flewelling, and Amelia Starbird.
The 5K race featured a slew of humans trying to outrace the zombies, who started one minute later. The zombies’ purpose was to catch the humans and collect as many flags off them as possible. Awards were presented to the first place human and first place zombie.
There were several obstacles on the two-loop course, including a hill climb, spider web, orange paint strips that covered participants with orange stripes, tires, a tunnel through a culvert, a series of three round and square hay-bale towers, and a crawl under a web.
