On Saturday, Sept. 12, neighbors will come together to make homes across Lincoln County safer, drier, warmer, and more accessible for those who need a hand through Community Cares Day. The annual community service event organized by Community Housing Improvement Project Inc. will mobilize roughly 100 volunteers to tackle 12–14 home improvement projects for residents who are unable to make critical repairs on their own.

Community Cares Day begins with a morning gathering at The Second Congregational Church of Newcastle before volunteers fan out across Lincoln County to tackle a variety of home improvement projects. Working alongside experienced crew leaders, volunteers will spend the day building, repairing, digging, painting, and problem-solving, helping local homeowners address critical repairs that enable them to continue living safely in their homes.
“Community Cares Day demonstrates the power of neighbors coming together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” said Randy Domina, CHIP board member and longtime volunteer. “In just a single day, volunteers complete projects that can improve safety, accessibility, and housing stability for local homeowners who too often have nowhere else to turn. Beyond these critical repairs, this event is really about building community and fostering hope.”
Volunteer registration is now open. Registration is required so that organizers can match volunteers with the right project.
While experienced tradespeople and crew leaders are essential to Community Cares Day, no project is completed by experts alone. Most work crews pair one or two skilled leaders with a larger team of volunteers of varying experience levels.
Not every contribution involves construction. Some volunteers assist with project support, photography, meal preparation, transportation, yardwork or other tasks that help the day run smoothly.
Lunch and a CHIP T-shirt will be provided. Both full-day and half-day volunteers are welcome.
