The Knox-Lincoln County Beekeepers group will host its monthly meeting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10. This meeting will feature a workshop for extracting honey.
This workshop will be in Owls Head, at Breakwater Vineyards, the home of hosts Bill and Jeanne Johnson. The vineyards feature more than 3,000 grapevines growing on the 32-acre farm overlooking scenic Rockland Harbor. There are three acres of grapes, including nine different varietals. There are also some dairy goats and chickens.
Members will bring their boxes full of honey frames, along with pails and covers to take the honey home. Experienced beekeepers will work at two extracting stations to help with the process. When the extraction process is done, the beekeeper will take home empty hives and full pails of honey.
Those who don’t have any honey to extract can come along to see how it is done. The kids will love to turn the crank and watch the honey flow.
Be sure to bring a lunch and a lawn chair.
All supers of honey must be on site by 1 p.m. to assure ample time for extraction.
This meeting is free and open to the public and anyone interested in beekeeping. Call Jean Vose at 563-7564 or go to klcbee.com for details and directions.
