Brother and sister Jacob Maker and Claire Libby were both recipients of the President’s Volunteer Service Award on Friday evening at Thornton Academy in Saco. Their combined efforts of community service equaled more than 265 hours of service in Maine. The awards were given through Crossroads Youth Center, a certifying organization of the award.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award, according to presidentialserviceawards, gov, “is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition” and comes from the President of the United States of America, jointly with Points of Light and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Jacob is the son of Sarah Falconer Libby and Rand Maker of New Harbor and South Bristol. He is entering his junior year at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, and volunteered his time to Camp POSTCARD and activities through the service fraternity Alpha Sigma Gamma at Lincoln Academy. Jacob earned a bronze-level award.
Claire is the daughter of Sarah and Scott Libby of Bristol. She is entering the second grade. Her services engaged anti-bullying activities, and donation collecting and volunteering at the Caring for Kids thrift store in Bristol, among many other activities and events. Claire earned a gold-level award.
Crossroads Youth Center hosted the Maine Academic Scholarship Pageant this past weekend, a fundraising event for Crossroads Youth Center and a state pageant associated with USA National Miss, a national pageant system. Eighty-five girls competed for division state titles and in optional events. Claire won first place in the non-performing talent optional event for her art portfolio submission; she also competed in casual wear, runway and evening gown as the current titleholder of Miss Penobscot Valley Princess 2016.
