Suicide rates went up more than 30 percent in half of the U.S. states from 1999-2016, according to a June 2018 Vitalsigns report from the Centers for Disease Control. Maine and Lincoln County have both seen those same steady increases.
To help raise awareness of suicide prevention and to remember loved ones lost, the local Hope & Resiliency Coalition invites community members to a candle-lighting ceremony and candlelit walk on World Suicide Prevention Day, Monday, Sept. 10. The candle-lighting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Boothbay Congregational Church, at 125 Townsend Ave. in Boothbay Harbor, and will be led by the Rev. Sarah Foulger. A short candlelit walk around downtown Boothbay Harbor will follow.
This event is part of the Hope & Resiliency Coalition’s ongoing efforts to support people in the community who are survivors of suicide and those who are struggling with mental health challenges. The coalition also works to increase community awareness of mental health challenges and suicide, and to offer hope, healing, and resiliency resources.
The coalition includes local support groups: Survivors of Suicide, which offers support for family members and close friends of suicide victims, and a monthly National Alliance on Mental Illness Combined Support Group in Boothbay Harbor.
The candlelit walk around the harbor will begin at 7:20 p.m. Attendees may choose to attend the candle-lighting ceremony, walk, or participate in both. Candles will be available and light refreshments will be served in the church hall during and after the walk.
