The Central Lincoln County YMCA and Hannaford Supermarket in Damariscotta will once again partner to host a Fill the Y Bus food drive. The Y bus will be parked in front of Hannaford Supermarket on Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 1-6 p.m. to collect food items in an effort to help support the Lincoln Academy Cubbies, the Great Salt Bay Community School and Nobleboro Central School backpack programs, and the Ecumenical Food Pantry.
LA Cubbies is a food-share program to help serve LA students in need of nourishment at no cost. The program includes snacks and take-home food items that are available to all. Many kids partake between after school and sports or clubs but the food can also be used to take home for the weekend.
The backpack program was implemented to provide nutritious food for kids in need to bring home over the weekend and for school breaks so they won’t go hungry when school is not in session. Backpacks with food are made available at their respective schools to those in need.
The Y and Hannaford Supermarket invite the community to help fill the Y bus. LA Cubbies would like granola bars, instant soups, ramen noodles, individual pasta heat-ups, chowder, fruit bars, and instant oatmeal. The backpack program has requested low-sodium tomato soup, rice, boxed macaroni and cheese, individual boxes of raisins, granola bars, individual packets of peanuts, oatmeal packets, nut and berry packets, fruit cups, and pancake mix. The Ecumenical Food Pantry could use bar soap, dish soap, shampoo, cooking oil, olive oil, granulated sugar, and low-sodium chicken broth.
Hannaford Supermarket and YMCA staff and volunteers, including kids in the Y’s Teen Leaders Club, will be on-site to accept donations, greet and thank community members for their generosity, and deliver donations.
