The Central Lincoln County YMCA is proud to recognize Brie Wajer and Evan Eckel, youth board members from 2015-2017, for their recent awards for volunteerism. The Lincoln Academy students were nominated by the local Masonic Lodge, Alna-Anchor Lodge #43, and the YMCA and recognized at the March 26 Maine Red Claws youth-volunteer recognition game, where they were each presented with a service certificate and a Maine Volunteer Service medallion.
The Maine Masons and Maine Commission for Community Service recognize volunteers, age 18 or younger, who devote 50 hours or more of documented service to the community. The program, Young Maine Volunteer Roll of Honor, shows appreciation and encouragement to volunteers 18 years of age and younger. Maine youth are volunteering at a rate that has earned the state recognition in national reports. The event is held to honor youth who are serving and changing their communities.
In addition to other community service projects, Brie and Evan each have completed more than 50 hours at the CLC YMCA. As president of the Y Teen Leaders Club, Brie has been instrumental in “motivating and leading her student and adult peers in carrying out our mission of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” said Karen-Ann Hagar, youth and teen program coordinator and community outreach coordinator.
Evan also assists with the Y Teen Leaders Club and co-leads with the middle-school Y Teen Leaders Club. He is on the planning committee for the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest event, where he has coordinated many student volunteers and has been instrumental in having a youth voice on the committee. Evan is currently mentoring one of the Y’s newest youth board members to follow in his footsteps, ensuring youth involvement for this nationally recognized event.
