A cryptic note in Christine Dodge’s “Old Bristol & Nobleboro Vital Records” has the Damariscotta cemetery trustees searching for the referenced headstone inventories. (See note published with this item.)
The 1909 tabulation would likely have been used by surveyor Frank Bulfinch while he prepared the map of Walpole-Huston-Woodward Cemetery. Efforts to locate his papers have so far proved fruitless. The 1946 reference would likely pertain to the work done by a team of data-gatherers who helped prepare the “Vital Records” manuscript.
This is the proverbial “needle in a haystack” plea in hopes that some attic contains one or both of the inventories mentioned in that note, or perhaps another surveyor’s office inherited Bulfinch’s papers when he died in 1930.
The trustees ask anyone with information to contact the Damariscotta town office at 563-5168.
