The placement of campaign posters and signs is subject to statutory and regulatory guidelines and requirements.
Under Maine law, signs with political messages relating to an election, primary, or referendum vote cannot be placed in the public right-of-way until six weeks prior to a vote and must be removed no later than a week after the vote.
Signs may be placed on private property at any time prior to an election, primary, or referendum.
In addition, signs may not be placed on any traffic signs or devices, public utility poles, or trees or other natural features.
A municipal ordinance with stricter controls takes precedence over state law.
