A local American Legion post and two local trucking companies are organizing a drive to collect a truckload of supplies for hurricane relief in Houston.
Yankee Pride Transport, of Damariscotta, is donating the truck, and Northeast Transport Inc., of Waldoboro, is donating the trailer.
The trailer will be set up at the American Legion Wells-Hussey Post No. 42 in Damariscotta by Monday, Sept. 11, and someone will man the trailer from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week until it is full.
The organizers welcome the public to drop off donations of paper towels, toilet paper, water, Gatorade, diapers (for infants and adults), baby wipes, hand sanitizer, shampoo, soap, canned goods, cleaning supplies, trash bags, work gloves, cat and dog food, and bedding. All bedding supplies must be in a marked box. No clothing or furniture will be accepted.
Cash donations are also welcome. To donate, send a check payable to Wells-Hussey Post No. 42, attention Bruce Poland, 527 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543 with “hurricane relief” in the memo. The donations will offset fuel and other costs. Any remainder will go to hurricane relief.
The tractor-trailer will depart Damariscotta for Texas on Sept. 26. Yankee Pride driver Woody McLean will deliver the supplies to a Legion post in Texas for distribution.
