After spending many weeks learning about various types of poetry and poetic devices, fourth graders had their moment to shine in a May 10 poetry slam at Nobleboro Central School.
Students in Tuesday Courand’s classroom entertained other NCS pupils, school staff, and their own family and friends, reading their original poems, playing live music, and showing what they have learned.
The poetry, which focused on a nature theme, included acrostic, haiku, shape, free verse, and mask poems. The children used poetic devices such as simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, sensory details, and more.
At the all-day event, the classroom was converted into a cool club, with tablecloths, battery-powered candles, a stage, microphone, curtain, and refreshments. Overcoming their nerves, the students all got up and read solo, then also offered duet poems and a quadruple poem, which showcased their teamwork skills.
