A much-anticipated event in Damariscotta will have a new name and many new additions. Formerly the Damariscotta Pirate Rendezvous, the event has expanded into a new title and mission: Pirate Rendezvous and Seafarers Celebration, set for Saturday, June 23 in Damariscotta.
The enhanced event will still include a kid pirate crew taking over the town at high noon and participating in other piratical activities, including a costume contest. There will also be plenty of maritime games and activities the children can participate in at the Riverside Bazaar, located at Schooner Landing in Damariscotta. New to the event will be an emphasis on education and history achieved through music, speakers, and educational exhibits, all focused on the Damariscotta River and local maritime traditions.
There will also be plenty of room at the Riverside Bazaar set aside for nonprofit groups to conduct their own fundraising activities and/or educate the public on their missions, without any type of fee.
The Pirate Rendezvous and Seafarers Celebration will continue to benefit three local food assistance groups: the Ecumenical Food Pantry, Blessings in a Backpack, and Feed Our Scholars.
“The Pirate Rendezvous has always been about the children who participate, and we’re hoping the Pirate Rendezvous and Seafarers Celebration will enhance that experience for them with the chance to enjoy music and speakers that bring Maine maritime traditions to life,” said event director Greg Latimer.
Musical groups and educational speakers are being finalized and announcements will be made soon, according to Latimer.
The Pirate Rendezvous and Seafarers Celebration will be held Saturday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a rain date Sunday, June 24. Activities will be centered at historic Schooner Landing Restaurant and Marina, located at 40 Main St. in Damariscotta, which was once a bustling wharf for oceangoing ships.
