The Community Housing Improvement Project Inc. Community Cares Day will take place Saturday, Sept. 9. While CHIP Inc. is busy throughout the year addressing people’s housing and emergency heating needs, this is the special day when 100 or more volunteer workers spend the day working on about 10 projects around Lincoln County helping make the homes of neighbors in need safer, warmer, and drier. Both individual volunteers and volunteer teams from groups are needed and being solicited. This remarkable tradition of neighbors helping neighbors began 15 years ago, in 2002, and an incredible amount of good has been accomplished over the last 15 years.
Last year, a wheelchair ramp was built, some broken windows were replaced, some back steps were repaired, rotten skirting was replaced on a mobile home, a walking ramp was built, some other steps were repaired, a house was painted and a ramp repaired, and another porch and ramp was painted. Each year, CHIP Inc. picks jobs that particularly need to be done, jobs that helps people live more warmly or safely, or drier, and jobs that fit the skills and people who are available to help.
Team leaders, skilled and semi-skilled volunteers, providers of food, organizers for the day, and financial donors to provide the building materials needed for the day are needed. To make a financial donation, send it to: CHIP Inc., P.O. Box 6, Newcastle, ME, 04553 and note on the check that it is for “CCD materials.” To help in any way, call 677-3450.
