The Waldoboro Public Library Artist of the Month for January and February is Waldoboro resident Elaine Abel.
“After selling my business and semiretiring from a career in construction management, I started taking watercolor painting classes,” said Abel. “Although I enjoyed learning this medium, I found that the loose style was not really in my DNA. I gravitate toward a more realistic style of painting and enjoy the flexibility and lushness of oils. Recognizing the ordinary — cracking an egg, preparing breakfast, arranging things on a table — all become exciting subjects asking to be painted, especially when the light from outside embraces them. They are no longer mundane. Painting them in real tones, more than an impression, is the fun and challenge. Tight compositions, saturated colors with light … finding comfort and inspiration in my surroundings.
“Living on the Medomak is magnificent — swimming, kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, and respite, essential and nurturing to my spirit,” she said. “Being in Maine is inspiring, surrounded by so many diverse artists, many of whom have been encouraging to me — and for that, I am grateful.”
