Starting Monday, Aug. 15, the Pemaquid Watershed Association’s office gallery at 584 Main St., Damariscotta will feature a show by Bath artist Pamela A. Allen called Mainely Color Play. The exhibit of watercolors will run through Friday, Sept. 30. A reception will be held for the artist on from 4:30-5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19 at the PWA office as part of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Twin Villages ArtWalk. The public is invited to this wine-and-cheese reception for Allen.
Born in Attleboro, Mass., Allen moved to Newport, Vt., and then to Maine. She is truly a New England artist. For the past 25 years, Allen has found many opportunities to use her art background as a graphic designer and owner of Bath Printing Company. The work she displays tends to depict the beauty of the surroundings — natural, manmade, and even whimsical. Painting mostly in watercolor, in a very illustrative style, Allen loves the interplay between light and dark.
Without much formal training, Allen has studied with many wonderful Maine artists such as Alicia Stonebreaker, Betsy Bisson, and Sandy Crabtree. Through the years, Allen has participated in a host of life drawing and plein air painting groups. Exhibiting locally at the Chocolate Church in Bath, Central Maine Medical Center, Portland Sidewalk Art Festival, and many small businesses that grant space to artists, as well as six galleries associated with the Attleboro Art Museum in Massachusetts, Allen truly enjoys sharing views of her surroundings with others.
Besides the ArtWalk artist reception on Aug. 19, the exhibit may be viewed weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the PWA’s new office. Allen is donating 35 percent of proceeds from sales to support the PWA’s mission of conserving the natural resources of the Pemaquid Peninsula region.
