‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ (PG-13; 2 hours, 4 minutes)
A real-life story, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” tells the account of keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, Antonina and Jan Zabinski, who helped save hundreds of people and animals during the German invasion. Starring two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain. Final screenings at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday, May 25.
‘A Quiet Passion’ (PG-13; 2 hours, 6 minutes)
Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson as she personifies the wit, intellectual independence, and pathos of the poet whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. Acclaimed British director Terence Davies exquisitely evokes Dickinson’s deep attachment to her close-knit family, along with the manners, mores, and spiritual convictions of her time that she struggled with and transcended in her poetry. Plays at 2 and 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27, and Wednesday, May 31, and at 2 p.m. only on Sunday, May 29.
Talking Art in Maine: Jesse Salisbury and Kazumi Hoshino
The Talking Art in Maine: Intimate Conversations series presents Jesse Salisbury and Kazumi Hoshino, husband and wife sculptors, interviewed by Newcastle artist Jane Dahmen. Influenced by Japanese stone-splitting and carving techniques, Salisbury hand-splits and then reassembles pieces of granite to bring out the stone’s inherent movement, raw power, and natural beauty. Hoshino lives close to nature; her sculpture is carved from local granite with a focus on intimate shapes. Free; 7 p.m., Thursday, June 1.
