Happenings
Moviemaking as a business is heavily male-dominated, which is why it is fascinating at times to see a film created from a different sensibility. This week, “The Beguiled” showcases the talents of director Sofia Coppola. It had its world premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and Coppola won the Best Director Award, making her the second woman to ever win in that category, 56 years after the first female director won. Let Coppola entrance you with her storytelling!
‘Food Evolution’ (No rating; 1 hour, 32 minutes)
From Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hamilton and narrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Food Evolution” is set amid a brutally polarized debate marked by fear, distrust, and confusion: the controversy surrounding GMOs and food. Traveling from Hawaiian papaya groves, to banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, “Food Evolution” wrestles with the emotions and the evidence driving one of the most heated arguments of our time. Plays at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10.
‘The Beguiled’ (R: 1 hour 33 minutes)
“The Beguiled” is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer and director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern boarding school for girls. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events. With Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Colin Farrell. Plays at 2 and 7 p.m., Friday-Sunday, Aug. 11-13 and Wednesday, Aug. 16.
‘Julius Caesar’ (2 hours, 32 minutes)
In the Royal Shakespeare Company’s presentation of “Julius Caesar,” Caesar returns from war, all-conquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power. It is a classic tale, in which politics of spin and betrayal turn to violence. Following his sellout productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s “Oppenheimer” in 2014 and James Fenton’s adaptation of “Don Quixote” in 2016, season director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control. Might it give echo to our current times? Plays at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17.
‘Dunkirk’ (PG-13: 1 hour 46 minutes)
Acclaimed auteur Christopher Nolan directs the World War II thriller “Dunkirk,” about the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold. Opens Friday, Aug. 18.
