Damariscotta photographer Ronn Orenstein’s creative imagery will be on display at Southport Memorial Library. This exhibit, titled “Escapes,” will run during the months of November and December.
Beginning his career in New York City, Orenstein has created award-winning studio work that spans more than 30 years. He has received numerous accolades from his peers for his commercial photography, including recognition by Art Direction Magazine and the Society of American Graphic Design. He has written various articles for publications such as Photo District News and Studio Photographer Magazine. Orenstein has also taught the techniques of conventional and digital format photography at a variety of educational levels.
Orenstein’s career began right out of college as a photo assistant in a high-volume catalog production facility. Learning on the fly, a formal photographic education was not in Orenstein’s career path. After having his own studio, he spent 14 years as director of photography for the Hartz Mountain Corp. This position was responsible for producing all imaging for packaging, marketing, point-of-purchase, catalog, and public relations.
In addition to present commercial assignments, Orenstein continues to find the pursuit of artistic photography challenging and therapeutic. Chasing the quality of natural light balances the control needed for studio setups.
Orenstein has moved more into photographic art over the past several years. He spends more time out of the studio, resulting in an increased appreciation for nature’s abundant beauty. “Every time I shoot, it becomes another challenge. You are only as good as your last image,” he said. “So I’m always searching for ways to improve, whether that be through image capture or image processing. The camera is a tool but also an extension of eye and mind, sometimes whispering a dare to find the right image amid the noise of everyday life.
