Four Maine artists — Debra Arter, Lucky Platt, Richard Reitz Smith, and Amy Tingle — will exhibit monotypes in a show called “The Painterly Print” at Thornton Oaks Retirement Community in Brunswick in August and September.
A monotype is a unique print. The artist creates the image in ink or oil paint on a smooth surface such as glass, metal, or stone. It is transferred only once to paper while still wet. That image is unique; any image pulled later from the same plate will be similar but will differ essentially.
“Making monotypes … is dealing with unpredictability as much as precision,” Arter, of Damariscotta, said. “Every answer starts another question.”
Arter focused on botanicals, specifically flowers from her garden, for this show
“I included various states of single images to show how subsequent prints carry a bit of the original image forward yet allow for added nuances to change the balance and mood of the print,” Arter said.
An opening reception with an artist talk will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the gallery at Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way in Brunswick. Admission is free.
“The Painterly Print” will be open to the public at Thornton Oaks from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, Aug. 2 through Sept. 29. Admission is free. Thornton Oaks is closed weekends and holidays.
