The DaPonte String Quartet will perform a free holiday concert in Newcastle on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m.
Every year for the past two decades, the quartet has offered Midcoast residents a free holiday concert. “This is our Christmas gift to the community that has welcomed and supported us since we first moved here from Philadelphia,” said DaPonte violinist Ferdinand “Dino” Liva.
This year’s program will include music by Scarlatti, a Mozart quartet, Britten’s “Simple Symphony,” and some Renaissance motets. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of Damariscotta’s finest purveyors of food.
The DaPonte String Quartet, Maine’s premier string ensemble, is celebrating its 26th year as a quartet. Founded in 1991 in Philadelphia, the group moved to Midcoast Maine 21 years ago on a National Endowment for the Arts rural residency grant, fell in love with the state, decided to stay, and now performs more than 50 times a year, year-round, from Presque Isle to Ogunquit.
The concert will be performed at the Second Congregational Church, 51 Main St., Newcastle. Admission is free. For more information, go to daponte.org or call 529-4555.
