Giving back to the community and fostering an appreciation of art has long been a mission of the Pemaquid Group of Artists.
Each year the Pemaquid Group of Artists presents checks to local schools and organizations for the purpose of encouraging and supporting art education. The funding is garnered through commissions, membership fees and donations.
Recipients of these charitable gifts in the past have included Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta, Bristol Consolidated School, Healthy Kids, South Bristol School and Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. A museum pass to the Portland Art Museum is also awarded to Skidompha Library for use by members of the community.
This year, the group is embarking upon the sale of artist-donated paintings. Individual member artists offer one of their original paintings for sale and the total proceeds from the sale going directly to the scholarship fund. Members Steve Busch, William Curtis, Dianne Dolan, Peggy Farrell, Claire Hancock, Kay Hannah, Hannah Ineson, Patti Leavitt, Sally Loughridge, Cindy Spencer, and Bob Vaughan have each donated works for the 2018 outreach effort.
The Pemaquid Group of Artists is one of the oldest art associations in Maine and is made up of 29 permanent members, one guest artist and a number of supportive patrons. The group formed in 1928 when a small group of local and summer resident artists from New Harbor sponsored a summer exhibition of their works. The long-standing tradition of exhibiting works by local resident artists continues.
