The Telling Room, a nonprofit creative writing center based in Portland, is excited to announce that, in August, Medomak Valley High School senior Elizabeth Flanagan, of Waldoboro, published her debut novel, “The Secrets They Left Behind,” as part of the organization’s Young Emerging Authors fellowship.
One of four teenage writers selected for the competitive program, Flanagan traveled to Portland each week as she wrote and revised the stirring historical mystery. Set in 1950s and 1920s Iowa, “The Secrets They Left Behind” follows 14-year-old Clara Rollins as she untangles an intricate web of secrets involving her father, his brother, an infamous bootlegger, and his beguiling wife.
Flanagan worked closely with a mentor, published author Deirdre McDonough-Fulton, as well as the book’s editors and designer.
