A brand-new musical is coming to Midcoast Maine this summer. As part of Thomaston’s contribution to the Maine bicentennial celebration, The Watts Hall Community Players have chosen “Count Me In,” a musical about Gen. Henry Knox, an American patriot, as their summer production. The show will be performed in historic Watts Hall, Thomaston, June 26, 27, and 28, and July 2 and 3.
Lincoln County pianist Sean Fleming, a veteran music director of countless Midcoast performances, composed most of the arrangements for this musical. The musical was written by a Thomaston resident and her talented 16-year-old granddaughter. They wanted to create something meaningful and lasting for both the community of Thomaston and the Knox Museum. Their solution? If the public could fall in love with a temperamental Colonial economist named Hamilton, perhaps they would embrace the daring Revolutionary patriot Henry Knox. The musical “Count Me In” was born.
The piece was begun in the summer of 2018 as a fun, multigenerational project but, after multiple revisions and input from area professionals, has become a wonderfully inspiring tribute to the lives of Henry and Lucy Knox. Logan George, the teenage composer, created 10 clever songs with 10 original melodies. Her grandmother, Benie Colvin, wrote the script.
“Count Me In” is more than a history lesson, and from the rousing opening title song “Count Me In,” to the heartwarming closing “Make My Mark,” the story should touch a relevant chord for theater-goers of all ages. The musical calls for a large, multigenerational cast and casting will begin mid-April in Watts Hall. Rehearsals will begin in early May.
