Oxbow Brewing Co., the farmhouse brewery located at 274 Jones Woods Road in Newcastle, has extended its summer hours to accommodate the upcoming summer season. Starting on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, the tasting room will be open seven days a week to serve fresh draft beer from noon-7 p.m., Sunday-Thursday, and from noon-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
In addition to the tasting room expanding its summer schedule, Oxbow Brewing Co. will also offer Food Truck Fridays. The Burgers & Freys food truck will kick off the weekly food program on Friday, May 26, starting at 4:30 p.m. and then set up at Oxbow Brewing Co. every Friday except for the first Friday of each month. The Uproot Pie Co. will be at Oxbow on those Fridays to serve up wood-fired pizza featuring local ingredients.
Damariscotta native Colin Frey is looking forward to returning to Lincoln County this summer to sell homemade burgers and fries from the Burgers & Freys food truck he purchased last year. Burgers & Freys partners with Maine farms for its food, such as cheese from Pineland Farms, of Gloucester, and meat from Farmers’ Gate Market, of Wales. Sourcing everything from Maine is important to Frey and to Dawn McKenna Frey, his wife and business partner. Customers can create their own burger or order one from the menu, and they come in a basket with fries made from Maine potatoes cut to order. The Farm Stand burger, a popular choice from the menu, features cheddar cheese, summer squash pickles, fixed greens, and tomato jam.
With a passion for sustainable food, wood-fired ovens, and Midcoast Maine, Jessica Shepard founded The Uproot Pie Co. in 2001. A 2004 graduate of Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore., Shepard spent her immediate years after school baking in wood-fired ovens, from a small town in North Carolina to the big city of Portland, Ore.. She was hired as a full-time bagel, pizza, and pita baker for many of the farmers markets around Portland and was inspired by the approach of bringing the ingredient straight back to the kitchen from the market. After finding a way to bake that really resonated with her, Shepard journeyed back to Maine, where she was raised by the sea. With the help of the creative talents of her partner, Andy White, she built a mobile wood-fired oven for the summer market season, catering, and local festivals in the Midcoast area, in addition to her monthly trip to Oxbow Brewing Co.
