Registration is now open for Hearty Roots, a new summer camp program for girls ages 9-15. Founded by Haley Bezon, a school counselor at Edgecomb Eddy School, the camp will provide girls with a “growth-producing” summer camp experience utilizing the restorative powers of nature.
Free Ice Cream for Vets on Memorial Day Weekend
To show its appreciation for the sacrifice of U.S. veterans, Total Victory Ice Cream in Waldoboro will be dispensing free ice cream to all military personnel and veterans on Memorial Day weekend, Friday-Monday, May 26-29. The venue will be open from 3-7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday to start the season, with expanded hours coming later as demand increases.
Boothbay-Area Organization Wins United Way Community Builder Award
At its annual meeting in May, United Way of Mid Coast Maine presented its Community Builder awards to the Boothbay region’s Hope and Resilience Committee and to the Midcoast Community Alliance in Sagadahoc County, two coalitions working to prevent youth suicide.
Tools Sought for Benefit Tag Sale at Carpenter’s Boat Shop
Those who have woodworking tools – power tools or hand tools – that they are no longer using should be advised that The Carpenter’s Boat Shop in Bristol is holding its massive Tool Tag Sale on Saturday, July 29 to benefit its apprenticeship program. Donated tools need to be in good working condition. The boat shop is not able to accept tools in need of repair.

Diaper Drive Heads into Third Year
The Ecumenical Diaper Bank is beginning its third year of distributing diapers to low-income families. This year, from Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 14, through Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, Midcoast-area churches will hold diaper drives. They hope to raise enough funds and diapers with this annual drive to continue to supplement family supplies of diapers for the coming year.

Lincoln County Quilters Display Quilts of Valor at Library
All of the quilts in the display this month at Skidompha Library, at 184 Main St. in Damariscotta, have been made by the Lincoln County Quilters of Midcoast Maine. They are known as Quilts of Valor, and are part of a large nationwide effort to provide custom quilts to U.S. veterans of war.
Protect Against Tickborne Diseases
The warmer weather is on its way, which means using proper protection methods against ticks and the diseases they carry. Maine had 1,473 cases of Lyme disease reported in 2016. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, the perfect time to remind people to be “tick-smart” by doing a daily tick check, since ticks are most active in warmer weather.
Spring Turkey Season Starts May 1
Spring turkey season starts on Monday, May 1 throughout Maine, but youth hunters had own day Saturday, April 29. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists believe that hunters are in for a successful season.
