Sunday, Oct. 5: here we are in the middle of the month of October which doesn’t seem possible. This is my first column of the month and a new week of my life at Crawford Commons.
Campaign Signs Defaced With Swastika in Wiscasset
Motorists on Rt. 1 in Wiscasset reported Oct. 14 that a number of campaign signs for U.S. Senator Susan Collins had been vandalized by someone who spray painted a symbol resembling a swastika on them. While the swastika image was painted in reverse, the intent of the vandal was clear, according to observers including Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline.
Wiscasset Loses a Dedicated Public Servant
There are very few people living in Wiscasset that didn’t know William J. “Bill” Curtis. He was a man that served his country in the time of war, and a man that served his community until the very end. He completed his last term as selectman in June 2013, at the age of 85.
Medomak Middle-Schoolers Cast Their Ballots
Working with sample state ballots specific to their respective towns, seventh- and eight-grade students both voted in and operated a mock election at Medomak Middle School Oct. 30.

This will all sort itself out in the long run, I expect, but we’ll be voting Nov. 4 on any write-in candidates for the budget committee, and separately on whether to repeal the budget committee ordinance. A Passion for Plants
When the temperatures dropped earlier this week, we were amazed that our basil was spared. Usually that is one of the most delicate plants to respond to the early frosts.
All season we have been busy pinching back the developing flower buds. If we had not removed the flower buds, not only would the leaves be diminished in size, but also the essential oils would disappear. We enjoy using basil in salads and in dishes with tomato, as well as in pesto.
Pumpkinboat Regatta Wet and Wild Fun in the Sun
In true Pumpkinfest style, the Pumpkinboat Regatta in Damariscotta Oct. 13 was full of zany costumes, fancy pumpkin boats, and comical antics, but there were a few twists this year, like a marriage proposal and Senator Susan Collins helping announce the races.

Newcastle Man Not Criminally Responsible by Reason of Insanity for Nude Assault
A 54-year-old Newcastle man who was naked when he attacked a female bicyclist on Belvedere Road in Nobleboro April 21 has been found not criminally responsible by reason of insanity.
