Hey folks, anyone tired of all the politics yet? How they’re all going to save us from ourselves? Oh my God, the sky is falling! Enough already! If these hopefuls would, as coach Belichick would say, “do your job,” we probably wouldn’t have half the issues we have and we probably would have a much higher caliber of people to pick from to run our great country!
Damariscotta History From the forest of tall white pine and fir trees came the empire of shipbuilding
The portion of beautiful forest land that became known as the white pine belt bordered the sea from Nova Scotia to New Hampshire. So we can plainly see that Maine was truly in the heart and middle of the belt of tall white pine trees that grew to a butt size of 38 inches and a length of over 100 feet. It was no wonder that the King of England laid claim to all white pine 20 inches and over at the butt and 100 feet tall for the Royal Navy.
No Longer Lower Round Pond Magic circles
Early morning begins with looking out the bedroom window to see what sort of day awaits; to drink in the resin scent of evergreens, the nut-like essence of hardwoods; and to marvel at this forest so deep and vast, the clean purity of it, the comfort in its loneliness.
Westport Island
Be alert and thankful, friends and neighbors! Last week, on Monday at 11:43 a.m., the Westport Fire Department was called to investigate smoke at the southern end of the island on Main Road. Inspection revealed a woods fire and, with the assistance of firefighters from both Wiscasset and Edgecomb, the fire was brought under control. In addition, the Alna Fire Department covered Wiscasset for water-supply purposes in case of another emergency.
Somewhere in Somerville
I’d like to start off this week’s column wishing Andraya Elena Roque and Phoenix Throckmorton-Hansford happy birthday! Andraya celebrates her sweet 16 this week, and Phoenix turns 19.
Waste Watch
In case you may not have noticed, we have a new scale for weighing brush and construction debris. In order to protect the scale from damage, users must follow some rules. You must enter and exit the scale very slowly. Also, do not stop or start abruptly. Following these rules will increase the longevity of the scale.
Edgecomb
The minute I sat down at Ye Olde Compoot to get this column out, the power went away for 45 minutes. A lot has been happening in Edgecomb, I’m sure more than I know about, but here’s what I’ve got:
Coastal Economist
The words of Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore have inspired me for decades. Recently, I was reminded of his famous poem that begins:
Ponder & Stir
“God gave all men all earth to love, but since our hearts are small, ordained for each one spot should prove beloved over all.”
View From Over the Hill Rain?
That was it? We have been looking forward to the rain for a week or more and I am disappointed. I have nearly run the church battery bank to the limit because of the lack of sunshine and the need to pump much water to the greenhouse and garden.
Rachel Carson Area
My hummingbirds have finally left for the winter. I will miss seeing them come to my feeder and I look forward to their return in the spring.
Talkin’ Trash Pemaquid Beach Cleanup 2016
Here’s to the students of Kevin Crafts’ and Jason Bigonia’s classes, who contributed their time and energy to a seashore cleanup on Friday, Sept. 23 at the town of Bristol’s Pemaquid Beach Park. The week of Sept. 17-24 was designated as Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, when volunteers all over our beautiful planet dedicate a bit of time to picking up trash along the shores of the world’s oceans. The trash is collected, identified, counted, and reported back to Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas program. According to a report released last May at the United Nations Environment Assembly, in the 2015 Coastal Cleanup nearly 800,000 volunteers worldwide collected an estimated 18 million pounds of trash — the equivalent of 100 Boeing 737s!
Truckin’ in America
Hey folks, we got through another week, I think, with nothin’ to get too excited about up in Augusta, but on the national scene, well, man, let’s just say there is a bunch of hootin’ and hollerin’ going on between these two whatevers that are running for the Big House! Now I don’t know about you, folks, but I haven’t even had a television all summer and I haven’t missed all those stupid political ads at all, so my condolences to those of you who have had to suffer through even the evenin’ news with that idiotic stuff coming on every two minutes.
Medomak Valley Senior Citizens
